His wife thought he had laughed at her and was making fun of her. Being able to understand animal languages was a secret he had kept because if he it was revealed then he would die. The merchant laughed how the donkey learned his lesson on not changing the momentum of the mule’s ability to work hard. The merchant laughed about the advice he had heard the donkey give to the ox about working hard and not complaining otherwise he would have his throat cut. The merchant knew the language of the beast in which he was able to hear and understand animal conversations.

The donkey stated, “All this happened to me because of my miscalculations.’ The donkey lied and told the ox he over heard the merchant talking about butchering the ox if he doesn’t continue to work. The donkey got his daily work done for the mule and had second thoughts of encouraging the mule to rest but instead to work otherwise be butchered. The merchant heard this conversation and had the donkey replace the mule’s daily job to teach him a lesson of making the mule get off track for working the plow. The ox complained and the donkey told he would feel better if he only stayed lying down when his food was served and to pretend to not feel well. I found it very amusing to read about how the vizier told his daughter to think about how the donkey advised the ox after hard day of work. The powers attributed by the animal world in of The Tale of the Ox and The Donkey is quiet interesting. How may these differences reflect the contrasting visions of gender relations so central to The Thousand and One Nights? Compare and contrast the powers attributed to the animal world in The Tale of the Ox and the Donkey and The Tale of the Merchant and His Wife with those described in The Story of the Merchant and the Demon.

Yes, Shahrayar was betrayed by his wife due to his male ego within such a macho society it’s considered normal. This story being a different culture entirely from what I grew up with I feel even though his wife had betrayed him he could have reacted in a more positive way. This does make sense to me in a way because Shahrayar had believed he could trust his wife although I don’t believe he should have killed her. He thought that since his wife would not be trustworthy that all women were the same way while their husbands were away. Instead of acting civilized used his rage and anger to try to find his own justification. Shahrayar’s felt betrayed and enraged and killed on impulse. He and his brother with their swords killed the slave girls.

Shahzama didn’t want to tell him why he started to feel better, but his brother Shahrayar convinced him. Shahzaman told him that he had his own dilemma of his wife falling into the arms of their cook so he killed them both and traveled to be with him. Shahrayar was concerned when his brother Shahzaman told him about why he was feeling ill and was losing so much weight when he arrived. Shahzaman became healthy mentally and physically again and his brother asked him why he was ill before. He started to eat and drink and feel better.
